THE COLLECT.
GRANT, O merciful God, that as thine holy Apostle Saint
James, leaving his father and all that he had, without delay was
obedient unto the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ, and followed him; so
we, forsaking all worldly and carnal affections, may be evermore ready
to follow thy holy commandments; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE
LESSON. Acts 11. 27.
IN those days
came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch. And there stood up one of
them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit, that there would be a
great famine throughout all the world; which came to pass in the days of
the Emperor Claudius. Then the disciples, every man according to his
ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in
Judaea: which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of
Barnabas and Saul. Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth
his hands to do evil to certain of the Church. And he killed James the
brother of John with the sword. And because he saw it pleased the Jews,
he proceeded further to take Peter also.
THE
GOSPEL.
St Matthew 20. 20
Then
came to him the mother of Zebedees children with her sons,
worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he
said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that
these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the
other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said,
Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I
shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am
baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto
them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the
baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand,
and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to
them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten
heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two
brethren. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that
the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and
they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall
not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let
him be your minister; and whosoever will be chief among you, let
him be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be
ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom
for many.

St Mark 10. 32.
AND they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus
was going before them; and they were amazed; and as they followed, they
were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what
things should happen unto him, saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem;
and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto
the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him
to the Gentiles; and they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and
shall spit upon him, and shall kill him; and the third day he shall rise
again. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came, unto him, saying,
Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall
desire. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right
hand, it and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. But Jesus said
unto them, Ye know not what ye ask. Can ye drink of the cup that I drink
of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they
said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink
of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized
withal shall ye be baptized: but to sit on my right hand and on my left
hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it hath
been prepared.

INTROIT. Ps
15
LORD, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? / or who shall
rest upon thy holy hill?
2 EVEN he that leadeth an uncorrupt life, and doeth the thing which is
right, / and speaketh the truth from his heart.
3 He that hath used no deceit in his tongue, nor done evil to his
neighbour, / and hath not slandered his neighbour.
4 He in whose eyes an ungodly man is despised / but he maketh much of
them that fear the LORD.
5 He that sweareth unto his neighbour, and disappointeth him not, /
though it were to his own hindrance.
6 He that hath not given his money upon usury, / nor taken a bribe
against the innocent.
7 WHOSO doeth these things / shall never fall.
Glory be.
GRADUAL.
Ps 149:1-6
O SING unto
the LORD a new song: / let the congregation of saints praise him.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: / and let the children of
Sion be joyful in their King.
3 Let them praise his Name in the dance: / let them sing praises unto
him with timbrel and harp.
4 For the LORD hath pleasure in his people, / and adorneth the humble
with salvation.
5 Let the saints be joyful with glory: / let them sing for joy upon
their couches.
6 Let the praises of God be in their mouth, / and a two-edged sword in
their hands;
